The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, creating a unique challenge in helping audiences navigate a large and complex venue. With such high volumes of people arriving in short timeframes, bottlenecks and confusion were common, and staff were often tied up directing visitors to their seats and to facilities. This highlighted the need for a clearer, more independent wayfinding solution that could guide audiences confidently while reducing the pressure on staff.
In preparation for the 75th anniversary event, I was tasked with designing a new wayfinding system that could ease staff workload while improving the visitor experience. The goal was to create something bold, intuitive and unmistakably on-brand.

I led the design process from initial concepts through to the final suite of signage, working with Scot Signs Ltd. to deliver a system tailored to the site’s specific spatial and environmental needs. Every element was carefully aligned with the Tattoo’s established identity to ensure consistency across formats. The result was a clear, cohesive, and highly visible wayfinding system that not only enhanced audience movement from arrival to exit but also freed up staff to focus on delivering a world-class event.
